Microsoft revamps YouTube app for Windows Phone 8

Microsoft announced Tuesday the release of an overhauled YouTube app for Windows Phone 8 to make the most of the mobile operating system’s features. While the previous iteration of the app was rather bland — a situation Microsoft blamed on Google compatibility issues — the new app is “completely redesigned” to take advantage of the platform’s live tiles presentation.

Microsoft claimed that Google, which bought YouTube in 2006, had been blocking Windows Phone 8 access to YouTube metadata that enables search for video categories, favorites, ratings, and other features, while allowing access to Android and iOS devices.
If that logjam has indeed been cleared, it’s not surprising that the new app packs a tidal wave of new features, including the ability to pin specific videos, playlists, channels, and search queries to Start as Live tiles for fast access. The feature extends to Kid’s Corner, allowing parents to limit children’s access to content.
The new version allows users to manage their YouTube profile, as well as playlists, uploads, and video lists. It also allows Windows Phone 8 users to share their discoveries on social networks, e-mail, and text messages.
Microsoft also announced that a Windows Phone 7.x with enhanced functionality was under development and would be released soon.
