HTC unveiled its new flagship phone, the HTC One, back in February with plans to release in March. But with reports of component shortages, the phone was delayed until April. WOMP. Ahead of its release the company reported gloomy earnings numbers—just $2.82 million, its lowest quarterly profit to date. WOMP WOMP.
Things were looking bleak for HTC, especially as analysts questioned whether the One could stand up against Samsung’s forthcoming Galaxy S 4. (To see how the phones match up, check out our spec comparison.)
But then—a ray of sunlight for HTC. After seeing the One, PCMag’s lead mobile analyst Sascha Segan penned a column asking, “Is HTC’s One a Samsung Killer?” in which he posited that “the HTC One could become a prestigious, premium leader in the global Android lineup. HTC will never match Samsung’s volume, but it could carve out a niche on quality for discerning buyers. To get there, though, HTC is going to have to sell the heck out of this phone.”
So what happened? When Segan got his hands on a unit he was impressed, awarding the HTC One an Editors’ Choice on Sprint’s network and calling it “the first truly compelling smartphone of 2013.” The gorgeous One features a 4.7-inch full HD 1080p display, a 1.7-GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, and a customized version of Android called HTC Sense. It also ups the ante with its new UltraPixel camera, which uses larger, but fewer pixels.
Others see potential in the phone too. CLSA Asia-Pacific Market analyst CK Cheng predicts HTC will ship about 3.5 million units in the second quarter and near 10 million in 2013. To meet this anticipated demand, Focus Taiwan reported that HTC North Asia President Jack Tong planned to double production capacity back in mid-May. “We are optimistic about our high-end sales during April and June,” he said.
